The savannah cat is a relatively new breed of cat, but it has already managed to become a fashionable cat and is often considered a prestigious object thanks to its eye-catching hair color. The savannah cat resembles the serval and takes its name from the habitat of this animal: the African savannah.

Origin of Savannah

The savannah was born from the mating of domestic cats with servals, medium-sized wild cats native to Africa. This mating was first carried out in 1989 in America.

Appearance of the savannah

The savannah is very big, it has thin legs, a long neck and a very small head. Its ears are very large compared to its head. The peculiarity of this breed of cat is the polka dot fur that comes from the Serval. This fur usually has a basic golden or beige tone and is lighter on the underside. Savannah cats look like a smaller copy of Serval.

Their weight is between 4.5 and 11 kg and depends on their size, therefore on the generation to which they belong. These size differences exist because in the first generations of these serval cats the genetic influence of the African wildcat was still very strong. From the 4th generation onwards, their size and weight stabilize.

Character of the savannah cats

Savannahs are very friendly, playful and sociable. They get along well with other animals. Savannahs also love water and will gladly bathe if you present them with a bathtub filled with water. They are very playful and enjoy harnessed walks. One of the particularities of this cat is its jumps: they can reach up to two meters in height.

In the United States, owning animals that are cross-bred between domestic and wild cats, such as the Savannah cat, is illegal in some states. In New York, the adoption of savannahs has been forbidden since 2005, but this is not the case everywhere. 6th generation serval cats are allowed outside of New York City, but totally prohibited within the city limits.
